The Flying Women of Totora hope to be brides and mothers in the coming year. It is the tradition
of the Columpios, one of the most original traditions in Bolivia, especially
in Totora. The women swing on giant swings about 30 ft tall, and are
helped in their swinging by bystanders pulling on ropes attached to the
seats of the swing. It starts the day after All Soul's Day,
November
1, and ends on the day of San Andres, which is on November 30.
It celebrates the fertility of the future brides, and the return of the
souls of the dearly departed. The additional links to magazine
